Commodity Intelligence Report
May 15, 2006
Years marked by spring planting delays (1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2003, and 2005) frequently were also years of below-average spring barley production resulting from reduced yield. Planting progress for 2006 was slow, due to cool March weather and wet soil conditions, and barley yield is forecast at 2.0 tons per hectare. This is roughly 20 percent below the yields achieved in three recent years of timely planting: 2001, 2002, and 2004. Area, meanwhile, has been increasing modestly but steadily since 1999.
