Harbin rain

Daily rainfall through June 22.  South-central Heilongjiang.  Harbin rainfall was less than 50 percent of normal until June 10, when several days of heavy rain quickly erased the deficit.  Until then, the drought in 2006 was worse than in 2001 and 2003, but the 2001 drought lasted longer and caused significant yield losses.  Temperatures were below normal through April, delaying the start of the planting season.  Warmer temperatures in May increased evaporation in drought-affected areas but benefited crop growth where water was available.
