Kostanai has surpassed Akmola to become the leading wheat oblast in Kazakhstan, with 3.8 million hectares in 2008 compared to 3.5 million in Akmola and 3.1 million in North Kazakhstan oblast. Sown area has been increasing in all three oblasts over the past ten years.
