Minimum temperatures in eastern Ukraine dropped below minus 20 degrees Celsius beginning around January 25, but protective snow cover was already in place prior to the low temperatures.  With average depths of about 8 centimeters (about 3 inches), the snow was not deep but was adequate to protect the dormant winter wheat from frost damage in most areas
