Minimum temperatures in north-central Ukraine fell below minus 25 degrees Celsius beginning around January 25, but protective snow cover was already in place prior to the low temperatures.  With average depths over 16 centimeters (over 6 inches), the snow cover was adequate to protect the dormant winter wheat from widespread frost damage.
