Commodity Intelligence Report
The term winterkill refers to the combined crop losses resulting from fall dryness (failure to emerge), winter frost damage, or ice crusting. Losses for 2012 are attributed to a combination of fall dryness and localized frost damage. Losses were not unusually high last year, at about 7 percent. Losses for the 2012/13 crop were nearly 18 percent, due chiefly to low emergence and poor establishment caused by fall dryness.
